To be a good fit for the Field Food Safety Sampler opportunity, you will have:
  • 0-2+ years of experience in the agricultural industry, preferably with produce and ideally including safety sampling. 
  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity Google Workspace products, such as Google Docs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts.
  • The ability to:
    • Learn relevant information such as commodity groups, good agricultural practices (GAP), and Leafy Greens Marketing Association (LGMA) standards.
    • Work under pressure to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
    • Analyze, understand and solve problems.
  • A team-player approach.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work effectively with limited supervision.
  • A valid driver's license and reliable transportation capable of driving on dirt roads to reach the fields and ranches. Quick question for you - click here
  • Bilingual skills in English and Spanish are a plus.
You need to know

You will spend a good deal of your time in agriculture fields, pulling samples. The role requires physical stamina to do lots of walking, as well as a willingness to work in varying weather conditions, including rain and high temperatures.  Quick question for you - click here

You may drive as far as 90 miles, round trip, in either the Salinas/Monterey County or Yuma areas. You'll need your own, reliable vehicle, a valid driver's license, and an insurable driving record. We'll provide a vehicle allowance and gas card. Typically you will start about 6:00 - 6:30 AM and be done by 3:00 - 3:30 PM, but we offer some flexibility. In return, you will need to be flexible about working additional hours now and then, including some Saturdays. Quick question for you - click here

The team relocates to the Yuma, Arizona area for about five months a year to accommodate different growing seasons. You will be responsible for finding your own lodgings.

Reporting to the Field Food Safety Manager, you will join a team that includes two Supervisors and another Sampler. The team coordinates with each other daily. You will be responsible for collecting pre-harvest samples and submitting those samples to the laboratory.

This will include daily communication with crop managers, driving to designated ranches, fields and lots, conducting pre-harvest sampling, verifying pre-harvest risk assessments, submitting samples to the laboratory, reviewing laboratory results and more. Specifically, you will:
  • Assume responsibility for learning the commodities.
  • Collect pre-harvest samples within agricultural fields. Quick question for you - click here
  • Create sampling reports to summarize the day's work.
  • Ensure compliance with customer requirements for pre-harvest sampling.
  • Interact with growers and harvesters to ensure practices comply with food safety standards.
  • Maintain necessary compliance paperwork.
  • Conduct food safety training.
  • Conduct internal pre-harvest risk assessments.
