You can be located on either the West or East Coast, as long as you are within commuting distance of Irwindale, CA or Florence, or Swedesboro, NJ. To be a good fit for the Automation Engineer opportunity, you will have:​
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical (preferred), Chemical or Mechanical Engineering; an advanced degree is an advantage. Quick question for you - click here
  • 5+ years of experience in hands-on automation engineering and programming with PLC / HMI / BMS systems in the manufacturing industry.
  • At least 2 years of experience in an FDA-regulated industry like Food (preferred), BioPharma, Pharma, etc. Quick question for you - click here
  • Minimum 1 year of Automation Management experience over projects and/or plant personnel; solid project management skills.
  • Excellent people, team, and verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence without formal authority.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills required.
  • Ability to multi-task and balance multiple priorities and projects in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. 
  • Ability to work in refrigerated facilities where temperatures can be as low as 34 degrees F.
  • Willingness to travel 25%-50%.
Preferred but not required:
  • Fresh cut Food Produce industry experience.
  • Experience with technologies including PLCs -- Allen-Bradley, Rockwell, Mitsubishi, Modicon, HMI, Fix32, Operator interface terminals like Panel View, etc. 
  • Documentation and computer system validation experience.
  • Automation / Controls engineering experience in a system integrator environment.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering, as Automation Engineer, you will be responsible for identifying and implementing technology to provide automation support to all North American manufacturing plants. Daily, you will leverage your knowledge of control system technology (PLCs, HMIs, OIs, etc.), as well as your strong grounding in the scientific fundamentals and the basic principles of systems used in processing and packaging, to support automation changes and inform project data.

This is an individual contributor role. You will act as a key member of the Engineering team and support the Engineering, Plant Operations, and Maintenance teams on a range of automation projects at multiple sites. On a high level, you will delve into the details of planning and defining projects, while also getting hands-on in terms of troubleshooting, controls, and validating the automation. On project work, you'll typically be part of a project team including a project engineer(s), a project leader, and the Tech team, including programmers, at each plant. Your specific responsibilities will include: 
  • The development and maintenance of automation / project standards.
  • Assessing, identifying, and developing automation solutions that support business investments.
  • Understanding and identifying technology solutions that are the best fit for the required solution.
  • Developing cost estimates, schedules, execution and startup budgets, and planning for activities.
  • Providing oversight of OEM's, contractors and BFA personnel working on controls projects.
  • Documenting automation / control systems (e.g. block flows, single line diagrams, P&ID's, etc.).
  • Leveraging your project management skills to support key initiatives (i.e. developing robust timelines, cost estimates, etc.).
  • Communicating effectively with stakeholders and collaborating cross-functionally.
  • Effectively interfacing with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and Procurement teams to support current operations and new installations.
  • Attending Global Engineering meetings in Irwindale.
