To be a good fit for the Safety Specialist opportunity, you will have:
  • A bachelor's degree, preferably with emphasis on EH&S or related science or engineering field.
  • 2 to 4 years of related safety experience, including supporting a manufacturing/production environment*.
  • Strong attention to detail and a proven track record of results with bias for action.
  • The ability to establish expectations, motivate, delegate and get work done through others effectively.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to utilize time and resources effectively and efficiently.
  • A sense of urgency and the ability to take action quickly in a fast-paced environment.
  • Unquestionably high ethical standards and attention to reputational and compliance risks.
  • Certification in Safety (CSP) is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of 5S and other organizational methodology concepts is a plus.
It is important that you understand that we work in a cold environment. We'll expect you to spend a few hours every day in production areas, which can be as low as 34° F. Quick question for you - click here

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Operations, you will be responsible for the management of and improvement to the EH&S programs to reduce risks and increase EH&S performance. This will include overseeing and ensuring compliance with all applicable policies and resolving deficiencies and/or issues. You also will be responsible for safety and environmental administration, injury case management, ergonomic injury prevention, technical safety advice and site-wide safety training at all levels of the organization.

Health and safety will be your priority. Basically we wash, cut, bag and ship salads, and there are a number of pinch points and slip/trip risks. In addition, people work with moving machinery, and on each shift, we have a lot of new employees at all times. You will observe operations to ensure everyone is following health and safety precautions.

More specifically, you will:
  • Implement and ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and environmental rules and regulations.
  • Manage facility environmental programs in the areas of hazardous waste, storm water pollution, and wastewater management. You'll inform management of environmental problems and solutions involving employees, the company and public. In addition, you'll prepare and submit environmental reports in compliance with local, state and federal environmental regulations.
  • Ensure all associates, both hourly and management, receive all training necessary to safely perform respective duties and operate within the plant environment. This includes training for managers on programs they are required to implement.
  • Regularly plan, implement and train site personnel on various EH&S policies and programs, including, but not limited to, safety practices, fire prevention, personal protective equipment, regulations and standards, and incident investigation.
  • Identify and suggest corrective measures to improve the facility's accident experience and suggest/implement means to achieve EH&S goals.
  • Ensure that mandatory OHSA reporting is completed, such as annual OSHA 300 log, notifications of serious accidents, etc.
  • Lead the investigation of accidents and injuries and prepare material and evidence as needed.
  • Regularly inspect the facility to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, and determine and implement corrective or preventive measures where indicated.
  • Oversee the administration of the workers' compensation program for the site.
  • Support the corporate EH&S program and direction, and maintain EH&S files and records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Your EH&S expertise will be essential, but just as important will be interpersonal and communication skills. You will interact quite a bit with supervisors and production associates on the plant floor, and you should establish yourself as a consultant who can help them stay safe and in compliance. For the most part a collaborative approach will work, but there will be times when you need to be assertive. 

You will need to be very organized and able to manage priorities well. In addition, in order to be an outstanding Safety Specialist, you will:
  • Demonstrate initiative and a strong sense of ownership and accountability.
  • Pay close attention to details, but also grasp the bigger picture.
  • Achieve individual goals autonomously but also know when to reach out for help.
  • Bring a sense of urgency and the ability to work well in a fast-paced environment.
